Linda A. Teplin, Ph.D., Owen L. Coon Professor of Psychiatry
Linda A. Teplin received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University in 1975. She is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, with joint appointments in the School of Education and Public Policy, the Sociology Department, and the Institute for Policy Research. She has conducted research on the interface between the mental health and criminal justice systems and is particularly interested in such public policy issues as the criminalization of the mentally ill, epidemiologic characteristics of adult and juvenile detainees, correlates of violence, and HIV/AIDS risk and infection.
Her honors include the MERIT Award from the National Institute of Mental Health, the American Psychological Association's career award for "Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy," the Bernard P. Harrison Award of Merit from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, the Hans W. Mattick Award from the Illinois Academy of Criminology, and the Young Scientist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
She is a Fellow in 4 divisions of the American Psychological Association: the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), Society for Community Research and Action, Psychology of Women, and American Psychology-Law Society.
Karen Abram received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 1988. She is the Associate Director of Psycho-Legal Studies and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She has a special interest in comorbidity of alcohol, drug, and mental disorders, trauma and intimate loss among offenders, mental health service use among offenders, the relationship between substance use and HIV/AIDS risk behaviors, and methods of subject retention in longitudinal studies.
Jason J. Washburn, Ph.D., ABPP, Research Assistant Professor
Jason J. Washburn received his M.A. (1999) and Ph.D. (2001) in Clinical Psychology from DePaul University, specializing in child and adolescent psychology. He completed his clinical internship in Community-Correctional Child Psychology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Child Psychology at the University of Michigan Medical School, and was the Robert Wood Johnson Research Scholar for the Northwestern Juvenile Project from 2003-2005. He is a Research Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He is a licensed clinical psychologist, a board certified child and adolescent psychologist, a fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychology, and Director of the Center for Evidence-Based Practice at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital. His special interests include mental health treatment of youth in the justice system, racial/ethnic disparities, development of antisocial behaviors and substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS risk and infection.
